The Gwinnett Stripers Minor League Baseball team has played in Lawrenceville, Georgia, since being established in 2009 as members of the Triple-A International League.[1][2] They have been affiliated with the Atlanta Braves since their inception, but were originally known as the Gwinnett Braves (2009–2018). With the restructuring of the minor leagues in 2021, they were placed in the Triple-A East, which became the International League again in 2022.[3][4]
The first game of the new baseball season for a team is played on Opening Day, and being named the Opening Day starting pitcher is an honor which is given to the player who is expected to lead the pitching staff that season,[5] though there are various strategic reasons why a team's best pitcher might not start on Opening Day.[6] The Stripers have used 13 different Opening Day starters in their 15 seasons.[7]
Gwinnett’s first Opening Day game was played against the Charlotte Knights at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill, South Carolina, on April 9, 2009. Tommy Hanson was their starting pitcher that day, receiving a no decision in a game the Braves won, 9–1. Their first Opening Day game held at home was an 8–6 win against the Knights at Coolray Field on April 8, 2010. Starter James Parr received a no-decision in the game.
The team's Opening Day starting pitchers have a combined Opening Day record of 5 wins, 2 losses, and 8 no decisions. At Coolray Field, they had a record of 3 wins, 2 losses, and 1 no-decision in 6 Opening Day starts. Gwinnett starters have a record of 2 win, 0 losses, and 6 no decisions in 8 Opening Day starts on the road. In Gwinnett’s history, only Mike Foltynewicz and Kyle Muller have made more than one Opening Day start, while [[ Michael Soroka]] is the only Opening Day starter to have also started an Opening Day game in Major League Baseball.[8][9][10]
